The president of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Francesco Rocca, has accused Europeans of treating Ukrainian and African refugees unequally. “Yes, there are double standards,” Rocca said Monday. While millions of people from Ukraine are welcomed with open arms, people from Africa are not.
“Those fleeing violence and seeking protection should be treated equally,” he said. “Ethnicity and nationality should not be decisive factors in saving lives.”
“The political, public and humanitarian response to the crisis in Ukraine has shown what is possible when humanity and dignity come first, when there is global solidarity and the will to help and protect the most vulnerable,” said IFRC Boss Rocca. “This should be extended to all those in need, wherever they come from.”
31,000 fled Africa, 6 million from Ukraine
Every year tens of thousands of migrants attempt the dangerous and often deadly crossing from Africa to Europe. More than 31,000 migrants made the sea voyage last year, according to the United Nations.
More than six million people have fled since the war started in Ukraine in late February, most of them to Central and Western Europe.
