The 13-year-old boy, who has been treated for a tetanus infection at the Kepler University Hospital in Linz since the end of July, has now woken up from his coma. He is recovering.
“The patient woke up from the coma without confusion on the 39th day of intensive care treatment, to everyone’s delight. The cramps have not occurred for several days,” confirms senior doctor Ariane Biebl, who has been caring for the boy since the diagnosis together with the pediatric intensive care team.
However, due to the severity of the disease, the necessary medications and artificial deep sleep, the boy is very weak and tired. “He must now be mobilized accordingly.”
A stay in rehabilitation is also necessary
After his stay in hospital, the 13-year-old will need rehabilitation to regain his strength. Biebl: “We are all happy and relieved that the patient is doing better. However, we continue to call on everyone to attend vaccination appointments to prevent a similar fate for other children.”
