The World Health Organization (WHO) assumes that coronavirus infections will lead to weaker disease progression over time. According to current knowledge, this is the most likely scenario, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in Geneva on Wednesday.
Disease severity associated with infection with the pathogen SARS-CoV-2 is likely to continue to decline despite further viral mutations as population immunity increases through vaccinations and infections. According to the WHO, this scenario could lead to an increase in the number of infections if the immunity of many people decreases over time.
Then, according to a WHO strategy paper, repeated booster vaccinations are necessary for groups of people who are at extra risk. The UN organization considers seasonal corona waves also possible in the temperate climate zones to which Europe belongs.
Six million corona deaths worldwide so far
According to the WHO, the weekly number of new infections worldwide has fallen by 14 percent in the past week to about ten million cases. Since the start of the pandemic through Sunday, a total of 479 million corona cases and more than six million deaths from Covid-19 have been reported.
