The Austrian severe weather center reported heavy rain, hail, gusty winds and lightning. Severe weather warnings are currently in force in all states, with the exception of Vorarlberg and Carinthia (advance warning).

The stations with the highest rainfall totals (until 5 p.m.) were Langenlois (Lower Austria) with more than 50 liters of rain per square meter, Kössen (Tyrol) with 33.9 liters and Mürzzuschlag (Styria) with 32 liters of rain per square meter. meters. Lots of lightning in Vienna
Ten to twenty liters of rain per square meter fell in large parts of Vienna on Wednesday evening. According to the emergency weather center, wind gusts of around 50 kilometers per hour were recorded. In addition, Vienna recorded the highest lightning density in Austria: 655 lightning discharges had been counted at 7:40 PM. A meteorologist, Christoph Matella, posted videos from Vienna and wrote about “a very beautiful lightning show” or “cloud lightning.” Styria had the second most lightning strikes, followed by Lower Austria. On September 8, the severe weather center reported that almost 1.1 million lightning strikes were recorded in the summer of 2023 (June 1 to August 31). July was the lightningiest month of the year, followed by August. In July there were repeated heavy storms around the Alps. In neighboring Friuli, Italy, a hailstone measuring 19 centimeters was documented, setting a new European record. End in sight
The storm season is already coming to an end, it was said five days ago. The ZAMG (Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics) reports further showers for Vienna, with temperatures around 24 degrees Celsius on Thursday. The clouds are expected to clear during the day and moderate winds will remain until the evening.

In Lower Austria, the rain is expected to decrease in the morning hours and the temperature will drop to 13 to 18 degrees. It is also cooling down in Burgenland, the showers will be replaced by sunny periods on Thursday. In Styria the weather remains relatively more unstable, but the clouds clear up a bit in the afternoon.
