There was a mild earthquake in Wiener Neustadt on Wednesday night. According to GeoSphere Austria (Austrian Seismological Service), the tremors with a magnitude of 2.2 were “weak to clearly observed” in the statutory city itself, but also in Neudörfl and Bad Sauerbrunn in the Mattersburg district.
At around 1:24 am the ground in Wiener Neustadt shook slightly. No damage to buildings is expected, says seismologist Rita Meurers. Several earthquakes have been recorded in the south of Lower Austria in recent months.
Series of earthquakes
The Gloggnitz area (Neunkirchen district) was the most affected. The series started on March 30, 2023 with strong tremors of magnitude 4.2. Also on June 30 the earth shook noticeably. More than two months ago, earthquakes of magnitude 2.9 and 3.3 were registered within fifteen minutes in the early evening.
