The UN cultural organization UNESCO has decided not to include Venice and its lagoon on the list of endangered World Heritage Sites. However, the committee on Thursday emphasized its concerns about the proper preservation of the city, which was recognized as a World Heritage Site in 1987.
Threats include mass tourism and climate change, it was said at a meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Thursday. Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano spoke of the decision as a “great victory for Italy and common sense.”
The lagoon city has already taken bold steps to manage tourism and ensure the protection of World Heritage sites. The municipal council decided on Tuesday to charge a fee of five euros to tourists who stay only a few hours and do not stay overnight.
