The Finnish parliament on Tuesday backed the government’s request to join NATO after a vote that resulted in 188 votes to eight. Shortly before that, the Chamber’s Foreign Affairs Committee had stated in a report that the country should submit the application to join the Atlantic Alliance in Ukraine in the midst of the war, as the Swedish government has decided, according to information from the newspaper ‘Ilta Sanomat’. .
Only MPs Johannes Yrttiaho, Merja Kyllonen, Anna Kontula, Markus Mustajarvi, Mika Niikko, Veronika Honkasalo and Katja Hanninen, the majority of the left, voted against membership. Three other deputies were absent, but no one abstained.
On Sunday, the country’s president, Sauli Niinisto, confirmed that the country would apply to join the military alliance after consulting parliament. Sweden officially announced its application on Monday. Both Finland and Sweden will jointly submit their application later this week.
The country’s president has indicated that he plans to travel to Washington this Thursday where he will meet his US counterpart Joe Biden along with Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, his office said in a statement.
The meeting, which will take place in the White House, will mainly serve to discuss the accession of these two countries to NATO, although Niinisto also has other meetings with different political actors on the agenda. Niinisto and Biden last met on March 4 in Washington.
