Smoke was reported to the emergency services. The result was a large-scale action by numerous fire brigades. More than two hours later everything was clear.
Steinach-Wipptal police reportedly developed smoke in the Brenner base tunnel around 7:40 p.m. When the patrol arrived, the officers contacted those responsible at the construction site. According to the Brenner Base Tunnel control center, no people were in the danger zone. At the same time, the special alarm plan with the fire brigade and operational managers was activated.
Unusual scenario
“The operation was mainly new territory for us, because it was the first on this construction site in the tunnel. We have never reported a fire before,” says Florian Raffl, commander of the Steinach am Brenner volunteer fire brigade.
After initial communication problems, the emergency services were able to enter the tunnel area. The operation was over around 9:50 p.m. “In the beginning it was not clear whether everyone was outside. So we went in and took a look,” says Raffl.
Neither fire nor smoke
Neither fire nor smoke could be observed during the passage. Those responsible for the Brenner Base Tunnel will carry out an assessment of the damage and its cause. No one was injured. The large-scale operation was likely caused by an overheated power distribution device. Construction work could resume around 5 a.m.
