A current study shows: In every second household, ’50:50′ or ‘half-half’ when it comes to housework is now a given. It will come as no surprise that this division also has a positive effect on cooperation, the respondents explain. Most respondents are satisfied with the current distribution, although women would then take on significantly more tasks in total.
Making a shopping list, doing laundry, repairing household appliances, caring for children, cooking meals, caring for sick relatives – the list of housework and so-called care work is extensive. According to a survey presented on Friday on behalf of the online dating agency Parship.at, 91 percent believe that good management of housework has a positive effect on the relationship.
62 percent of women would like to transfer responsibility more often
In two-thirds of the partnerships, the tasks are clearly divided. The vast majority of respondents are satisfied with this, but 62 percent of women would like to transfer responsibility more often. The study interviewed 650 people in Austria who live in a household with a partner.
Men see ‘half-half’ fulfilled significantly more often
About half say “half” is a given in their relationship, although significantly more men (65 percent) than women (45 percent). In practice, it is mainly women who are responsible for household organization (71 percent vs. men 45 percent), childcare (86 percent vs. 21 percent) and meal planning (78 percent vs. 35 percent). Both men and women are responsible for supporting family members in need (65 and 63 percent respectively).
“For many couples, this topic is about the feeling of fairness and appreciation,” says Parship psychologist Caroline Erb. However, the oft-cited ‘mental strain’ more often affects women. 71 percent of female respondents were satisfied with the distribution, 89 percent of men. 50 percent of women would like their partner to take on more tasks.
