What women want is and remains a mystery to many men. Mel Gibson came one step closer to the solution in the 2000 film of the same name, but that required dropping a hairdryer in the bathtub. An international study now offers safer insights into women’s preferences and men’s expectations and how these change with age.

Researchers from the University of Göttingen, Indiana University and Queen’s University Belfast examined this question and surveyed more than 20,000 single women aged 18 to 67 from almost 150 countries. In addition to heterosexual women, two groups that are often overlooked in psychological research were also taken into account: bisexual and lesbian women.
