Sabrina Filzmoser did it! From sea level in India by bike to Nepal and then on foot to the highest mountain in the world, that was the mission of the Austrian judo grand dame. Now that the Upper Austrian has made it, the 41-year-old ex-European champion has arrived at Mount Everest!
With a judo band and a Judo For Peace mascot, Sabrina stood on the highest mountain in the world at 8,848 meters on Sunday afternoon! “These were the hardest days of my life. I was lucky enough to be on the top in good weather,” says Filzmoser. The four-time Olympic participant from (Upper) Austria and the current vice president of the association has been traveling through India and Nepal since March.
“Being too good to be true!”
She rode her bike for more than 1,000 kilometers, sometimes in temperatures over 40 degrees, and climbed more than 10,000 meters. In early April, she began preparing for the Everest ascent. “I promised my mother that I would come back with all my fingers and toes and a clear head too. I succeeded”, Sabrina beams and adds happily: “It’s too good to be true: I have reached my goal.”
