The construction site of the A10 tunnel once again caused chaos and inconvenience. Thousands of holidaymakers and locals were stuck in the streets of Salzburg. Traffic experts are currently calling the chaos the “worst bottleneck in Austria”.
Nothing works anymore! Neither on the A10 nor on the national highways. This was the scene on Saturday morning in the streets between Hallein and Eben. The renovation of the five tunnels between Golling and Werfen had a major impact on the state. Many holidaymakers started their return journey, day trippers wanted to go to the mountains and some locals just wanted to go home. But: there were jams everywhere.
“The worst bottleneck in Austria”
Anyone who had to leave Eben im Pongau for Salzburg around lunchtime on Saturday needed a lot of time. The delay on the Tauernautobahn was approximately 170 minutes – just under three hours.
By comparison, if you want to cover the 300 kilometers from Salzburg to Vienna by car, you can do it faster and in less than three hours. ÖAMTC expert Harald Lasser rightly calls the A10 “the worst bottleneck in Austria”.
Alternative traffic finds its way
The communities along the route also struggle with alternative traffic. While Pfarrwerfen city center is now protected by the traffic lights from the block clearance, it is now blocked by other parts of the city. The sheet metal avalanche rolled on the B99 through the Fritztal and piled up around Pöham.
Golling also has problems. By mid-morning there was nothing going on in the city. Resident Tilli Struber-Steiner has been fighting for years to improve the traffic situation in vain: “When travel traffic and construction sites come together, it is unbearable for us!”
