The North African country of Libya is not coming to rest. Fighting broke out in the capital on Tuesday as the parliament-appointed prime minister tried to take over the government. According to his office, he has since left Tripoli.
Shots were heard in the Libyan capital on Tuesday. Video clips of fighting in the city center and in the harbor were shown on television. Schools were closed then. Prime Minister Fathi Bashagha, who was appointed by parliament and wanted to take over the government, has already left Tripoli.
elections failed
He had tried several times unsuccessfully to reach the capital, but was stopped. Last week Bashagha announced that he wanted to work from Sirte. Prime Minister Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah, who has been deposed by parliament, does not want to resign from his position. This can only happen after an election and not after a mere parliamentary vote. The elections were originally scheduled for December last year. However, the rival factions got into a fight over the electoral rules, so that to this day no vote has taken place. Some of the candidates were also excluded at the time, such as the son of former ruler Muammar al-Gaddafi, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, because he had committed war crimes.
peace efforts difficult
The elections were intended as part of the UN-supervised peace process. Those peace efforts have been suspended since Bashagha was appointed prime minister earlier this year. The country is divided into an Eastern and Western faction and fears of civil war are growing.
In 2011, longtime ruler Muammar al-Gaddafi was overthrown. About eight years later, Eastern Civil War Party commander Khalifa Haftar attempted to take Tripoli and reduce parts of it to rubble. After the civil war, a ceasefire has been in effect since 2020.
