Ukrainian forces achieved a significant tactical success on the Donetsk front: they were able to recapture the city of Klishchiyivka in southern Bakhmut. The army had earlier advanced to the north of the city occupied by Russian troops. Ukraine now has options to put pressure on Bakhmut.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the units involved for the recapture of Klishchiivka in the east of the country. “Today I would especially like to mention the soldiers who are gradually taking back Ukraine’s property, especially in the Bakhmut region,” Zelensky said on Sunday evening. “Klishchiyivka. Beautiful boys,” he said.
The tactical situation for the Russians deteriorated
There had been heavy fighting for weeks over Klischchiivka, which was occupied by the Russians at the beginning of this year. With the liberation of the city, the tactical situation of the Russian occupation forces in Bakhmut itself deteriorates, meaning that the Russian army is now in danger of being pinned down from the north and south. The occupiers therefore try to regain the lost positions and bombard them with artillery. Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maljar said on Sunday that they had to fend off attacks all day.
Meanwhile, Russia says it repelled Ukrainian drones in several regions on Monday evening. The drones were intercepted over the Crimean Peninsula, in the Moscow region and in Belgorod and Voronezh in the southwestern part of the country, the Russian Defense Ministry said in the online service Telegram. No information was given on the exact number of drones or casualties.
Rocket attack on Kharkov
At the same time, the Defense Ministry said a tank factory in Kharkiv, northeastern Ukraine, where tanks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces are repaired, was hit by a rocket attack. Earlier, the head of the local Ukrainian military administration reported on Telegram that a company in the city was hit by four rockets and a fire broke out.
According to media reports, there were several explosions on Sunday in the Crimean port city of Sevastopol, which was annexed in 2014. The Russian Defense Ministry, on the other hand, simply announced on Sunday: “Two Ukrainian drones have been destroyed by air defenses over the southwestern part of the Crimean Peninsula.” Meanwhile, several Telegram channels published photos showing a blaze of fire above the city. Residents reported a strong burning smell.
Burning smell in Sevastopol “not dangerous”
According to the Moscow-appointed governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvoshayev, no infrastructure objects were hit. The port city is also the base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Raswoshayev explained the smell of fire with a smoke screen that the Navy had used to provide visual protection from the drones. “Yes, the smell is unpleasant, but completely harmless,” he wrote on Telegram.
In recent days, Ukraine has attacked targets in Crimea several times with drones and cruise missiles. Among other things, a shipyard and two warships were damaged; a day later, according to information from Kiev, a modern S-400 anti-aircraft unit was also destroyed. Russia has not yet confirmed the loss of the S-400. Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian war of aggression for more than a year and a half.
