A fatal hiking accident occurred in the Tennengebirge (Salzburg) on Sunday afternoon. An experienced mountain climber from Hallein fell 50 meters and died at the crash site.
Together with two other hikers, the 75-year-old descended from Werdenweng via the well-known climbing system “Thronleiter”, secured with a rope, to the foot of the Hochthron. However, the Hallein man slipped backward near a ledge and fell about 100 feet over steep, rocky terrain. He remained twenty meters under a field of rubble.
Resuscitation attempts failed
His two walking colleagues alerted the emergency services and provided first aid. But despite attempts at resuscitation, the 75-year-old died at the scene of the accident. The police helicopter “Lieblle” brought his companions into the valley. There they were cared for by a Red Cross crisis intervention team.
