Every year again? Despite increased security measures, riots have broken out again in Berlin. About 500 people fought a fireworks battle on Alexanderplatz. A ball bomb even destroyed an emergency vehicle.
About 500 people threw fireworks at each other at the Neptune Fountain near Alexanderplatz, Berlin police said on Sunday evening. Alexanderplatz had previously been declared a prohibited area for fireworks and other fireworks.
Police officers were attacked
“Our colleagues dispersed the group and checked for fireworks. Our emergency services were bombarded with fireworks from a group of approximately 200 people who were near the passageways of the town hall,” the statement said. Arrests were made.
A man was arrested for this in the Neukölln district. He was shooting around with an empty gun. He offered “vigorous resistance” when arrested. A knife and drugs were found next to the weapon.
A bullet bomb was also fired at an emergency vehicle in the same neighborhood. It was so badly damaged that it had to be taken out of use.
Thousands of police officers on duty
After the wild riots last year, security measures in the city were significantly tightened. About 3,500 police officers controlled the fireworks ban zones, and more than 1,000 officers were on duty in patrol cars and police stations.
500 federal police officers monitored the train stations. They were also intended to protect firefighters and rescue workers who were attacked en masse on New Year’s Eve a year ago.
“Night of repression”
Berlin Mayor Kai Wenger (CDU) announced a crackdown on Sunday. “Everyone should feel that the rule of law applies in Berlin – even on New Year’s Eve.”
New Year’s Eve is the night of repression “where the rule of law will try to assert itself,” the CDU politician said during a visit to a police station on Sonnenallee in Neukölln.
Tens of thousands of people still celebrated at the traditional New Year’s Eve party at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, despite isolated showers and strict security measures. According to organizers, 45,000 tickets had been sold by early Sunday evening and the party was intended for a maximum of 65,000 people.
