American reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested for alleged espionage, remains in Russian custody for the time being. The Moscow court on Tuesday did not respond to a complaint by Gershkovich’s lawyers against the recently extended pre-trial detention, who currently does not feel responsible.
The court referred the lawyer to another agency, the Russian state agency Tass reported. The city court justified the pause with alleged and unspecified “circumstances” that currently did not allow the city court grievance process.
The US demands release
The 31-year-old reporter from the renowned ‘Wall Street Journal’ was arrested by the secret service FSB in March in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg in the Urals. His pre-trial detention was recently extended until the end of November.
He is accused of collecting classified information about the Russian military-industrial complex for US agencies. The Wall Street Journal rejects this. Gershkovich did his work with official accreditation. The US government is also calling for the immediate release of the correspondent.
