Dramatic scenes Wednesday morning in the Innviertel: A stop escalated during the search for smugglers and illegal migrants. Shots were fired and a police car was rammed. The search for refugees is currently underway.
What is known so far: On Wednesday around 9 a.m., patrol teams of officers from Tumeltsham, specialists from the Border and Immigration Police, carried out a priority check along the Hausruck state road. The goal: arrest smugglers. As is known, two smugglers with dozens of victims were arrested two days ago in Braunau and Altheim.
Prisoners fled
The officers tried to stop a suspicious box truck near Reichersberg. Then the situation escalated. According to initial reports, warning shots were fired and a police car – a civilian vehicle – was rammed by the tractor. Then most of the prisoners would have fled. Two suspected smugglers were arrested. Thirteen people were arrested during a manhunt; two adults and two children had already been arrested. Two people are currently still on the run. It is still unclear whether these are the smugglers or illegal migrants.
The good news: No one was injured in the incident. We will report it on krone.at as soon as there are new details.
