Politicians in Ukraine must now make their assets digitally public again. The country’s parliament adopted this by a large majority on Wednesday. The MPs thus corrected their own decision from last week.
The arrangement also applies to senior civil servants. The so-called e-declarations were suspended for security reasons when the war broke out in 2022. The Rada in Kiev now wanted to reintroduce it, but provided for a transition period of one year. President Volodymyr Zelensky vetoed it and demanded immediate disclosure. A petition also collected tens of thousands of signatures. The Minister of Defense had previously announced that he wanted to take tougher action against corruption in the army (see video above).
The fight against corruption is a prerequisite for Ukraine’s accession to the EU. However, the European Parliament is currently conducting its own investigation into corruption in the bribery scandal surrounding Qatar and Morocco. The Public Prosecution Service accuses the suspects of, among other things, money laundering and membership of a criminal organization. Possible formal errors in the study are currently being investigated.
Immunity violated?
An investigation into whether her immunity has been violated in the investigations against the former deputy speaker of parliament, Eva Kaili, will be conducted in mid-May next year, a spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service said on Wednesday. Kaili is suspected of being part of the bribery scandal in the EU Parliament that became public at the end of last year. In any case, her lawyers believe that the Greek woman’s immunity has been violated. All parties now have until May 14 to put their arguments on paper.
Also involved in the scandal are EU MPs Marc Tarabella and Andrea Cozzolino, as well as Francesco Giorgi, Kaili’s partner.
