A German climate activist (41) has been sentenced to eight months in prison in Berlin. According to the group Last Generation, this is the highest punishment ever imposed on a member for sit-ins.
The 41-year-old activist was found guilty of coercion, attempted coercion and resisting officials, a court spokeswoman announced on Thursday. Because the woman stated at the hearing that she wanted to continue protesting, the court did not say that the social prognosis was favorable. This would be necessary for a suspended sentence. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
Stuck on the road twice
According to the court, the woman took part in three blockades in Berlin between October 10 and 19, 2022 and in two cases also put herself on the street. The woman from Cologne was initially sentenced to fines by writ of execution. But she objected and a lawsuit ensued. The Public Prosecution Service in Berlin had demanded a fine of 1,350 euros in total (against 90 daily rates of 15 euros each), but the court in Berlin went further and imposed a prison sentence.

The procedure in Munich was stopped
According to the Last Generation, one of their protests was also negotiated in Munich on Wednesday. This case against an activist over a road blockade in Bavaria in August has been dropped. The group noticed that the differences in sentences for the same thing were absurd.
At the same time, she announced new protests on the X platform (formerly Twitter) “until the government fulfills its obligation to protect our livelihoods.” For example, next Saturday the group is planning a brunch and protest march in Berlin. In Austria, the Last Generation is currently inviting people to protest against training and crisis discussions – also in Vienna, Graz and online.
