The explosions at Russia’s Chkalovsky military air base near Moscow this week may have raised concerns in the Kremlin, according to British military experts. The British intelligence service reported this on Friday on X (formerly Twitter).
“This is a sensitive location as it hosts specialized military aircraft and VIP transport for the Russian leadership circle,” said the daily intelligence report from the Ministry of Defense in London on the war in Ukraine (tweet below).
Damage to Russian reconnaissance aircraft
According to London, reports of damage to an Ilyushin I-20M reconnaissance aircraft with the NATO reporting name “Coot-A” are particularly relevant. According to the Ukrainian military intelligence service HUR, saboteurs have destroyed two planes and a helicopter at the heavily guarded airport near Moscow. Explosives were attached to the three aircraft.
According to the British, both sides are currently trying to gain an advantage by striking in the enemy’s hinterland, given the relatively deadlocked situation on the ground. The Russians’ intensified, far-reaching attacks on Ukraine are likely partly a response to incidents in Russia and Crimea.
Since the start of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine in February 2022, the British Ministry of Defense has published daily information about the progress of the war. Moscow accuses London of disinformation.
ISW: Progress in the Ukrainian offensive
According to US military experts, the Ukrainian army is making progress in its offensive in the south of the country. On the front sector near Robotyne in the Zaporizhia region, Ukrainian armored vehicles were spotted outside the last Russian defense line for the first time, the Institute for War Studies (ISW) reported on Thursday evening.
But it is still too early to say with certainty that this Russian defense line has been breached. In its situation report for Friday morning, the General Staff in Kiev reported the Ukrainian advance near Bakhmut in the east and on the front in the south. At the same time, Robotyne managed to repel Russian counterattacks, it was said. However, the information cannot be independently verified at this time.
