Four indicators of climate change at record levels

Date:

According to the new climate status report from the World Weather Organization (WMO), four key indicators of climate change have reached record levels. This underscores the devastating effects of human activities on the ecosystems that must ensure the survival of humanity, the WMO reported in Geneva on Wednesday.

Records were set for sea level rise, ocean heat content, ocean acidification and the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. These are mainly carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane.

The WMO confirmed its preliminary calculation that the global average temperature in 2021 was about 1.1 degrees above pre-industrial levels (1850 to 1900) and that the past seven years were the warmest on record. The warmest year on record was 2016, with 1.2 degrees above pre-industrial levels.
