Sicilian mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, who was arrested in January after thirty years on the run, is in an irreversible coma.
Life support measures have been stopped, the hospital in the central Italian city of L’Aquila, where 61-year-old Messina Denaro is being treated for an intestinal tumor, said on Friday evening. The mafioso has been in hospital for over a month.
Advanced colon cancer
An intestinal operation the boss underwent on August 8 was successful, but advanced colon cancer caused his health to deteriorate. He was held in a high-security prison in L’Aquila after his arrest in January.
Last great godfather of Cosa Nostra
Messina Denaro is seen as the last big boss of the Sicilian Cosa Nostra, but also as a link with the Calabrian ‘Ndrangheta in the cocaine trade. He was convicted for his involvement in dozens of murders.
He is also believed to be behind the 1992 bombings that killed anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.
Messina Denaro was wanted by the Italian justice system for thirty years. He stayed in the town of Campobello di Mazara in Sicily. Messina Denaro is known for his love for expensive things and living in luxury. Several people who had facilitated his lengthy escape were arrested, including his sister.
