Medical tour de force! American surgeons have managed to perform the world’s second pig heart transplant.
And they did it again! We are talking about the surgical team at the University of Maryland Medical Center in the US. Last year, as reported, doctors successfully inserted a genetically modified pig heart into patient David Bennet and thus made medical history. It was the first procedure of its kind at the time, but unfortunately the patient died two months after the transplant.
The patient can now sit alone in an armchair again
Now the second successful transplant has been achieved. Terminally ill US Navy veteran Lawrence Faucette (58) would most likely have received death threats. However, due to other health problems, a traditional heart transplant was not an option. After the successful operation, the patient was able to sit alone in a chair again two days after the procedure.
But the coming weeks will be crucial in whether the body will come to terms with the new animal organ.
“I just have to keep shaking my head. “How can I talk to someone who has a pig heart?” surgeon Bartley Griffith, who performed the procedure, told the AP.
