A year after her election victory in the Italian parliamentary elections on September 25, 2022, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed her disappointment with her government’s record in the fight against illegal migration. “I had hoped for more when it came to immigration policy. We have worked a lot, but the results are not what we had hoped for,” Meloni said on Saturday evening.
“Migration is a very complex issue, but I am sure we will get it under control,” Meloni assured in the INTERVie wmit Rai 1.
“Italy now more credible and stable”
Italy has now become “more credible and stable” from a political point of view and has become more heard on the international stage, the right-wing populist said.
“Italy was at the bottom of Europe, while today it is growing more than any other European country,” Meloni said.
She was confident she would remain in office for a full five-year term.
Major reforms in focus
During this period, she wants to implement the major reforms that Italy needs, including tax and judicial reforms.
“There is still a lot to do, but we will fulfill our obligations,” assured the head of the right-wing party “Fratelli d’Italia” (Brothers of Italy).
Meloni first female Prime Minister of Italy
Meloni’s right-wing coalition won parliamentary elections a year ago with 44 percent of the vote, enough for a comfortable majority in parliament. Her party won 26 percent of the vote, three times more than Silvio Berlusconi’s Lega allies Matteo Salvini and Forza Italia. This allowed Meloni to become the first female prime minister in Italian history at the head of a right-wing majority in October.
