The identity of the dead man has now been established in connection with a body found on the Wienerberg at the end of August. The deceased was a 44-year-old Polish citizen who last lived in the federal territory without being registered.
The discovery of the body caused an outcry after three brutal attacks on homeless people in the federal capital last summer, in two cases ending in the victims’ deaths.
The exact cause of death can no longer be determined
From the start, police denied speculation that the dead man discovered on the Wienerberg could also be the victim of the alleged serial perpetrator they were looking for. The man died of natural causes, although the exact cause of death could no longer be determined. The already skeletal body probably lay in a bush for several months before it was discovered.
The identity of the dead man was recently established. The 44-year-old man of Polish descent was without a place of residence in Vienna.
Serial perpetrator still on the run
The suspected serial perpetrator, who targets homeless people, is still at large. The executive’s focus is therefore on prevention in homeless shelters – educational and awareness-raising conversations – and on a denser network of police checks on busy sleeping places for the homeless.
