The newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, refused on Tuesday to rule out the use of military or economic measures in his intention to regain control of the Panama Canalas well as Acquire Greenlandan autonomous area under Danish administration.
‘Can I assure you that we will not exercise those options? No, I can’tTrump said during a press conference in Florida. ‘We need these areas for our economic security’he added.
Trump has expressed his desire to do so regain control of the Panama Canal to ensure that, according to him, China ‘takes control’ of the infrastructure. He recalled that the Canal was “built by our military” and criticized late former President Jimmy Carter’s decision to cede control to Panama in 1999: “It is vital to our country. It is administered by China. it to Panama, not to China, and they abused that gift. That decision should never have been made.
Trump has also threatened to do so impose duties on Denmark as he continues to reject his offer to buy Greenland, describing the island as key to national security. In response, Denmark has reiterated that Greenland is not for sale.
The president-elect has also proposed changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America”called it a ‘beautiful name’ and justified the idea as a reaffirmation of sovereignty.
On the other hand, it has demanded NATO member states increase their defense spending to 5% of their GDPwell above the current 2% target, arguing that “they can afford it.”
Trump’s proposals have drawn international criticism, while the authorities of Mexico and Panama have not yet commented on his statements.
