The first climbers of this season climbed Mount Everest from the Nepalese side. At 1:52 p.m. Saturday, nine Sherpas arrived at the top of the world’s tallest mountain, a spokesman for Nepal’s tourism ministry in the capital Kathmandu said.
The group had fixed ropes strung, which served as support for subsequent groups as they climbed, it said. Sherpas are a Himalayan ethnic group whose members often work as mountain guides and porters for mountaineers from abroad.
Record number of climbers expected
A record number of people want to climb Mount Everest this spring. According to the Ministry of Tourism, a total of 467 people have been allowed to climb from Nepal’s southern side. Most are from China and the US. In principle, an ascent is possible from both Nepal and China. However, as of 2019, China has not issued such permits to foreign tourists.
Everest, located on the border between Nepal and Chinese-ruled Tibet, is the highest mountain in the world at 8,848 meters. Hundreds of people try to climb the top every year. In Nepal, a permit for this costs about 10,000 euros, and the entire expedition costs between 40,000 and 100,000 euros. Climbers die again and again on Everest.
