Before the 99th birthday: – Jimmy Carter makes a surprise visit to the peanut parade

Date:

After months of palliative care at home, former US President Jimmy Carter surprised people in his hometown with a public appearance.

Carter and his wife Rosalynn showed up in a dark limousine during a peanut parade in the small community of Plains, Georgia, on Saturday. Carter was a peanut farmer himself.

The Carter Foundation wrote on Twitter (X): “A beautiful day for President and Mrs. Carter to enjoy a ride through the Plains Peanut Festival. And that was just a week before his 99th birthday.” He probably ate peanut butter ice cream for lunch.

“In the last chapter”
Carter, 98, has been receiving palliative care at home with his family since mid-February. The foundation he founded announced at the time that the ex-president did not want to take any further medical steps after a series of hospital stays. In mid-August, one of Carter’s grandchildren said, referring to his grandfather’s health, “We’re in the final chapter.”

Carter was president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, when he was replaced by Republican Ronald Reagan. He is the oldest living former American president. In 2002, Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize for his international achievements. He has been married to his wife Rosalynn (96) for 77 years.
