“The ECB is trying to cause a recession and increase unemployment to hold back the working class”

Date:

Mitxel Lakuntza, general secretary of the Abertzale union, does not understand “the silence” in light of the statements of ECB President Christine Lagarde, and calls on the governments of Sánchez, Urkullu and Chivite to clarify whether they “do this kind of cruelty.”

Mitxel Lakuntzageneral secretary of ELA, has described as “very serious” the words of Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB) at the meeting of central bank governors on “the need to raise interest rates to increase unemployment” . in this way “you reduce the bargaining power of the working class, so that wages rise less.”

Statements that demonstrate to the Secretary General that “Lagarde, in addition to making mortgages more expensive, also wants to increase unemployment to weaken the bargaining power of the working class.” Lakuntza does not understand “the silence” in light of these statements, and calls on the governments of Sánchez, Urkullu and Chivite to clarify whether they justify “this kind of atrocities”.

This was denounced in the presentation of the Situation analysis 145 prepared by the Union Studies Bureau, jointly with Aitor Murgia, member of said cabinet. The study concludes that labor reform is failing to address the contingency and that inflation is the result of big business benefits.

The dossier analyzes the current economic situation, both internationally and in the Basque Country, where special emphasis is placed on the high cost of living, the lack of measures to tackle inflation and the loss of purchasing power, corporate profits, GDP or future crises. and geopolitical tensions, among others.

Murgia has pointed out that the data analyzed shows that the economy is slowing down, and the trend will be negative in the coming months. So that ‘Europe approaches stagflationi.e. stagnation with high inflation”.

As for inflation, the member of the Study Cabinet assures that we are again faced with a high price increase. “Food is up 25% in two years, and although the annualized CPI is now 2.6%, it is rising again and we will be above 4% by the end of the year.”

However, they denounce the fact that the real causes are not being addressed and that the policies of impoverishment of the working class are still being applied, as interest rate increase. “All analyzes (from the IMF, the World Bank, the Business Margin Observatories…) indicate that inflation is fundamentally due to a increase in corporate profits and speculative activities“.

All this while increasing the percentage people without sufficient income to cover the usual expenses in the BAC. “The 2022 Social Needs Survey indicates that the 22.3% of the population of the CAPV (almost 500,000 people) do not reach the income considered necessary to maintain the minimum level of well-being and comfort expected in our society”.
