After a mudslide turned into a mudslide in South Tyrol’s Val Badia on Monday, 146 residents had to be evacuated from 56 houses in the village of Campill. But they were able to return again on Tuesday afternoon.
The mudflow rolled through the Seresbach towards Campill in the municipality of St. Martin in Thurn and caused significant damage. The evacuation operation from the threatened area was a precautionary measure, the state of South Tyrol announced on Tuesday morning.
All clear after reconnaissance flight
After a reconnaissance flight in which state governor Arno Kompatscher also took part, it was clear: “Thanks to the efforts of many helpers and sympathizers and after the accurate analysis by the state geologists, we were able to clarify everything.”
The evacuated villagers were previously housed with relatives and in gymnasiums. The situation will be reassessed at a civil protection meeting at 7 p.m.
According to the mayor, the Mure outbreak area covered an area of approximately four hectares. In total, between 300,000 and 500,000 cubic meters of debris and mud flowed into the valley as a result of heavy rainfall. The mud flow pushed the stream bed down. In addition to rubble, stones, mud and water, she also carried uprooted trees – as well as large pieces of wood. Some bridges and even a mill were demolished. The mudflow rolled through the valley at a speed of 100 meters per hour. The material laid the main flow.
Mud seeped into houses
Despite the non-stop efforts of ten excavators and countless firefighters, she finally reached the village. Muddy material partially penetrated the houses. In addition to the fire department, state geologists and stream control engineers were also on site. The latter had built a diversion dam of concrete components for safety purposes.
