Thousands to Armenia – Nagorno-Karabakh: Wave of refugees is underway

Date:

Following the defeat of pro-Armenian forces against Azerbaijan, thousands of people have already fled to Armenia from the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. The Armenian government announced on Tuesday that a total of 13,350 refugees from the Caucasus region have entered Armenia so far. Shelters will be provided for anyone without shelter.

A week ago, Azerbaijan launched a large-scale military offensive in Nagorno-Karabakh. Just a day later, pro-Armenian fighters there had to accept a ceasefire agreement. Nagorno-Karabakh belongs to Azerbaijan under international law, but the area is predominantly Armenian.

Twenty dead and hundreds injured in explosion disaster
The humanitarian crisis was worsened on Monday by the explosion of a fuel depot. At least 20 people were killed, according to pro-Armenian separatists in the region. At least 290 other people were hospitalized with injuries of varying severity, the regional health ministry said on Tuesday. Dozens of injured people were in mortal danger.

The cause of the explosion is still unclear. Large flames could be seen in photos on social networks. Politician Metakse Akopjan said that at the time of the accident, many people in the camp were queuing for gasoline because they wanted to flee the Azerbaijanis in cars to Armenia.

“Capacities not sufficient”
The region’s human rights office appealed to the international community: there is an urgent need to fly out people, especially seriously injured people, for treatment. “Nagorno-Karabakh’s medical capacity is not sufficient to save human lives,” the statement on Twitter (X) said.

The humanitarian situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, which has been disputed between the two hostile ex-Soviet republics Armenia and Azerbaijan since the 1990s, is already catastrophic. Azerbaijanis have been blocking the only Armenian access road for months, making food, medicine and gasoline scarce in the region.
