Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, who is already in prison under appalling conditions, has appealed his 19-year prison sentence. The appeals court decided to “leave Mr Navalny’s sentence at first instance unchanged,” judge Viktor Rogow said on Tuesday. Things could now get even more awkward for the rebellious Russian.
The jailed Navalny was sentenced in early August to a further 19 years in prison in a high-security penal colony in a trial for “extremism”. The 47-year-old was accused at trial of founding and financing an “extremist” organization; He is also said to have called for extremist activities and a “revived Nazi ideology.”
Navalny is considered Putin’s fiercest domestic critic. The 47-year-old is currently serving a nine-year prison sentence for alleged fraud in the IK-6 prison camp, about 250 kilometers southeast of Moscow. The already harsh prison conditions could become even worse after Navalny’s latest sentence was confirmed.
Only intended for serious criminals
High-security penal colonies are among the toughest facilities in the Russian prison system. They are usually intended for criminals and life convicts. Navalny’s lawyer Olga Mikhailova told the AFP news agency after the appeal was rejected that her client could now be transferred to one of these institutions “at any time”.
Prison system run by ‘real sick perverts’.
According to Navalny, everything in Russian prisons is aimed at dehumanizing and harassing the prisoners. “Everything you read about the horror and fascist crimes of our prison system is the truth. With a correction: the reality is even worse,” he wrote.
For example, there are the well-known rapes with a mop; things that normal people would never think about. “The prison system is run not just by a veritable collection of villains, but by actual sick perverts.”
