A Chinese zookeeper was very lucky when he was suddenly attacked by a hippopotamus while feeding last weekend. Surveillance camera footage shows the dramatic moments when the man runs for his life.
The worker at Changsha Zoo in southern China’s Hunan province was about to feed the barrel mammals when a fight broke out between two bulls, local media reported. The goalkeeper wanted to settle the argument and, as the video recordings show, tried to distract one of the two giants with some food.
But suddenly one of the two animals’ anger turned toward the zookeeper. While trying to escape, the man slipped on the wet concrete and was already under the hippo, which opened its mouth. Fearing death, the man rolled away and was lucky. Because the hippo turned away again and trotted away.
Zoo spokesperson: ‘Employees know when it is dangerous’
The zoo operators and the responsible forestry agency are now investigating how the dangerous incident could have occurred. In a statement, a spokesperson said zoo employees were well aware when it was dangerous to enter animal enclosures. “You should be particularly careful when males are involved in fights or when females are in heat,” it added.
