About two months after the coup in Niger, the military junta accepted the Algerian government as a mediator. The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this on Monday on platform X (formerly Twitter). A peaceful, political solution to the crisis is now within reach again.
Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf will travel to the neighboring country as soon as possible to hold “preparatory talks” for mediation in the capital Niamey. There was initially no confirmation of the putschists. The Algerian government had already presented an initiative at the end of August to resolve the crisis in Niger. She proposed a six-month transition period under civilian control, which was accepted by all parties, which would return the Sahel state to civilian administration. All actors in the conflict must therefore be involved in the political process.
As reported, the West African Community of States (ECOWAS) threatened the coup plotters with military intervention following the coup and revoked Niger’s membership in the group. At the same time, ECOWAS was also working on a diplomatic solution. At the time, the Algerian government spoke out against military intervention.
The constitution no longer applies
The coup took place on July 26. The Presidential Guard in Niger has deposed Democratic President Mohamed Bazoum. The commander of the elite unit, General Abdourahamane Tiani, appointed himself the new ruler and suspended the constitutional order. For the US and European governments, Niger has so far been a key partner in the fight against terrorism in the Sahel region, after the military previously took power in Mali and Burkina Faso.
