The Red Cross uses megaphones to search for people in need in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. A woman was found bedridden in an apartment and then taken to Armenia by ambulance. The supplies were depleted when employees found them.
About 100,000 Armenians have already left the Nagorno-Karabakh region following Azerbaijan’s military victory. According to Marco Succi of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), there are only a few hundred people left in the remote region of Azerbaijan. The police can be seen on the streets. Electricity and waterworks. Succi has not yet noticed that Azerbaijani citizens have moved into the abandoned houses and apartments.
The Red Cross is currently using megaphones to find people who need help. They discovered a bedridden woman whose neighbors had been unable to take them as they fled. They left behind her supply of food and drink.
The Nagorno-Karabakh region belongs to Azerbaijan under international law, but until now the majority of ethnic Armenians have lived there. Bergkarbach declared itself independent after a referendum in 1991. This was not internationally recognized and was boycotted by the Azerbaijani minority.
In the decades that followed, there were repeated battles over the region, most recently in 2020. The Azerbaijani side largely closed access routes to Nagorno-Karabakh early this year, leading to a serious supply crisis. In mid-September, the Azerbaijani army retook the region by force.
