Only temporarily: leader of the violence in Kosovo arrested

Date:

The initiator of the latest attack by Serbian paramilitaries on Kosovo’s security forces has been arrested for 48 hours. Milan Radoicic publicly admitted that he was the perpetrator of the violent crimes. Now a court will decide whether he should be held in custody for 30 days, as the Serbian Interior Ministry announced.

The Kosovo Serb businessman and politician is suspected of illegally manufacturing explosive substances and illegally possessing and selling firearms. There may also have been serious violations of general security, the Serbian news agency Tanjug reported. Radoicic is said not to have confessed during his interrogation. However, a few days earlier the businessman had publicly recognized himself as the leader of the Banjska operation.

As reported, on September 24, a heavily armed Serbian commando group of 30 members attacked Kosovan police officers in the town of Banjska near Mitrovica in northern Kosovo. Three Serb attackers and a Kosovo police officer were killed. As a result, voices were raised calling for those responsible for the violence to be held accountable.

Tensions remain
The incident increased tensions between Kosovo and Serbia. The Kosovo government accused the Serbian government of being behind the action. But Radoicic regretted acting on his own initiative. The Kosovo and US governments also accused the Serbian government of increasing its military presence on the border. She denies this again. News agencies report a decrease in the number of troops (see video above).

Here you can see Albin Kurti’s tweet.

On Monday, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti said that Serbian paramilitaries had trained on Serbian territory before their attack in Banjska. He also posted drone images showing these exercises on the X platform (formerly Twitter). The aggressors took the drone images themselves and the Kosovo police seized them along with weapons. The former Serbian province of Kosovo declared independence in 2008 after a bloody war. However, the Serbian government does not recognize this.
