Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has canceled his participation in peace talks in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. He is said to have spoken with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan under EU mediation. The politician also wanted the Turkish government as an ally, which the EU in turn rejected, it was said.
The heads of state and government of France, Germany and Armenia, as well as the President of the EU Council, Charles Michel, took part in the meeting in Spain. However, the president of Azerbaijan canceled because he feared a hostile atmosphere. Michel and French government members have repeatedly “made pro-Armenian statements,” an Azerbaijani news agency reported. She referred to France’s decision to supply military equipment to Armenia.
According to the agency, Aliyev does not want to hold talks with the French government, but three-way talks with the EU and Armenia are possible. As reported, the Azerbaijani army attacked the Nagorno-Karabakh region about two weeks ago. A day after the attack, the ethnic Armenians surrendered and announced they would leave the area. The Caucasus belongs to Azerbaijan under international law, but was predominantly inhabited by ethnic Armenians.
SPÖ MP calls for EU mission
More than 100,000 residents have now fled to Armenia (see video above). Fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh has been going on for decades, killing thousands of people. If SPÖ member Christoph Matznetter has his way, there should be an EU mission to give refugees a safe chance of return.
At the same time, the international community and the Austrian government must help with more resources “to end the humanitarian emergency or prevent a humanitarian crisis.” The people of the region deserve peace, the MP said.
