Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) exchanged views during a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Wednesday evening about ways to de-escalate Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and about bilateral relations between Austria and Israel. An “immediate ceasefire and peace negotiations under the Istanbul process” are needed for peace in Ukraine, Nehammer said. Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi agrees.
“We will continue to do everything in our power to contribute to a peaceful solution,” the chancellor stressed.
Italian Prime Minister Draghi also calls for ceasefire
“A ceasefire must be reached as soon as possible,” Mario Draghi demanded in a speech to the Senate in Rome. The Italian prime minister said it is important to continue the pressure on Russia through economic sanctions “because we need to get Moscow to the negotiating table”. He also spoke out in favor of Ukraine joining the EU. Italy is trying to achieve energy independence from Russia.
Terror in Israel: Nehammer assures “full solidarity”.
The telephone conversation also discussed deepening bilateral relations between Austria and Israel in the context of the planned strategic partnership. Nehammer assured Israel “full solidarity and support for Israel after the terrorist attacks of recent weeks”. A visit by the Chancellor to Israel is planned “in the near future”.
