More than 60 people are said to have been killed in a drone strike on a military academy in central Syria on Thursday. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the attack on the academy in the city of Homs took place as officers were being appointed there.
The military blamed a “terrorist organization” for the attack, which killed soldiers and “at least nine civilians.” According to the activists, the Syrian Defense Minister also attended the graduation ceremony for officer students at the military college. Syrian state media reported that there had been many casualties, but did not provide figures. The Syrian army wants to respond “with the utmost seriousness” to the “cowardly act of terror.”
Islamic militia suspected of attack
The Syrian Observatory suspects that it could be an attack by the militant Islamic militia Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) or the terrorist group Islamic State. Both want to overthrow the government of President Bashar al-Assad, who now controls two-thirds of the country, including Homs province.
The conflict in Syria began in the spring of 2011 with anti-government protests. The government took violent action against this. There is no political solution to the conflict in sight.
