On Thursday, a large-scale raid took place in the Camorra stronghold of Caivano near Naples for the second time in just ten days. According to the Italian government, more than 400 security forces were deployed.
During the major raid, numerous searches and checks on suspicious persons and vehicles were carried out. Carabinieri drug-sniffing dogs and helicopters were also deployed. The 35,000-resident community of Caivano is considered a center for drug trafficking.
Two weeks ago, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited the city where two underage girls were raped by youth gangs. Meloni spoke of an “inhuman act”. The victims are two girls aged eleven and thirteen.
With the visit, the head of the right-wing ruling party Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy) followed the invitation of a Catholic priest from Caivano. The priest Maurizio Patriciello, whose police escort was expanded on Wednesday, had made a name for himself by preaching against the Camorra, the local mafia.
