The day after the fatal attack on a jogger in Upper Austria, a family simply tied their four-legged friend – believed to be a similar breed to ‘Elmo’, who had ended up in the bloodlust – to the fence in front of the Freistadt animal shelter and sped away into the car. An employee is stunned during the ‘Krone’ interview.
“They tied the dog to the fence. Then they jumped in the car and drove away. A colleague tried to open a car door, but she was kicked.” “Giving up” a dog to the Freistadt animal shelter the day after the terrible incident in Naarn would have been so wild, says employee Tamara Binder.
Similar breed to “Elmo”
The owners were apparently in a hurry to get rid of their four-legged friend. “It’s a pit bull, an American Staffordshire or a mix,” says Binder. A similar dog to the American Staffordshire terrier, also known as a ‘fighting dog’, which descended into a deadly bloodlust on Monday.
The animal shelter in Freistadt is full and there is a waiting list for dogs. But the four-legged friend’s owners didn’t want to believe that, so they simply left their pet behind. Binder is annoyed: “You bought the dog and you have to take responsibility.”
Animal shelters are full
Not only in Freistadt: many animal shelters in Upper Austria are full. But the animal shelters in Linz and Braunau report that the dog tax is not yet increasing. Normal activities are also taking place in Steyr. “But of course there is a fear that there will be more,” says manager Monika Stadler, awaiting a response to the incident in Naarn.
