Bavarian investigators have arrested the suspected thief of the pectoral cross of the late ex-Pope Benedict XVI. captured. The Bavarian State Criminal Police (LKA) announced on Friday that it was a 53-year-old serial thief from the Czech Republic. He has already been imprisoned in several European countries.
As reported, on June 19, the pectoral cross of ex-Pope Benedict was stolen from a display case in the church in Saint Oswald (see video above). Benedict, who died on New Year’s Eve, had spent many years of his life in Traunstein and left one of his pectoral crosses to the community of Sankt Oswald, which he described as his “home parish church”. According to the State Criminal Investigation Department, the forensic investigation at the crime scene has now been able to collect sufficient evidence and comparing the traces with international databases has led to the 53-year-old Czech.
The alleged perpetrator is said to have dealt with thieves in Germany and other European countries from 1990 onwards. On August 18, the man turned himself in to Czech police near his home after the pressure to search for him became too much. The Czech is now in custody in Traunstein.
Haven’t crossed back yet
According to police, the man has not yet revealed where the pectoral cross is located. If he returns it, he will receive a “significant reduction in sentence,” the chief prosecutor promised. The researchers also offered a reward of 1,000 euros for information about the whereabouts. Because of his actions, the 53-year-old faces a prison sentence of several years for theft.
