With a perfect emergency landing in the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee, the pilot of a transport plane from the American courier and logistics company FedEx saved the lives of the crew on Tuesday evening. Due to a malfunction, the landing gear of the Boeing 757 could not be extended.
During the emergency landing at Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport, sparks flew during landing, but fortunately no fire broke out. None of the three-man crew on board were injured, US media reported.
Jet glided down the runway
The plane had taken off on a flight to Memphis shortly after 10 p.m. local time when the pilot reported a problem a short time later. The Boeing 757 then flew a few laps over the city before finally landing without its landing gear extended and sliding off the runway into a meadow.
“There was no fire, just smoke from the engines. Great job by the pilot and airport staff, as well as all the emergency responders and their coordinated efforts,” the Chattanooga Fire Department wrote on X (formerly Twitter, see tweet below) Wednesday morning.
The airport said the main runway would remain closed “until further notice.” The cause of the chassis defect is under investigation, the company said.
