A 43-year-old from Spittal responded quickly and with presence of mind on Wednesday. When he noticed a car trapped between closed rail barriers, he didn’t hesitate and helped a 74-year-old woman.
Shortly before noon, the 74-year-old driver apparently missed the glowing red light at a level crossing in Spittal an der Drau and wanted to cross the track. “While she was on the railway tracks, the railway barriers closed and the woman was locked up,” said a police officer.
Woman rescued, ÖBB warned
A 43-year-old from Spittal then showed moral courage: he immediately stopped, got out and bent the eight-meter barrier to the predetermined breaking point so that the 74-year-old could leave the danger zone. “After the woman was rescued, the man called the police emergency number,” the police continued. This alerted the ÖBB, which immediately warned all incoming trains: “The trains that arrived shortly afterwards and had already been warned drove at walking pace through the danger zone until the barrier was repaired.”
There is still an advertisement for the 74-year-old at the BH Spittal an der Drau.
