On the people’s side: the EPP nominates Iranian women for the Sakharov Prize

Date:

The European People’s Party (EPP) nominates Mahsa Amini and the women of Iran for this year’s Sakharov Prize. As the Austrian press service of the parliamentary group announced on Wednesday evening, Amini is a “symbol of the people in Iran’s desire for freedom and the struggle of Iranians for their human rights.”

“With the appointment of Mahsa Amini, the European People’s Party in the European Parliament once again stands on the side of the people, freedom and democracy and against unscrupulous regimes such as in Iran, which use oppression, terror, torture and murder against their own people. said EU MP Christian Sagartz (ÖVP), Vice-Chairman of the Human Rights Committee in the European Parliament. Iran needs reforms towards democracy and the rule of law, as well as an end to inhumane policies, both internally and externally. In addition, political prisoners must be released.

The Secret Service reported arrests
It was only late Tuesday evening (local time) that the Iranian justice portal Misan published a video allegedly showing confessions from several men. They acted as “leaders” of demonstrations in the US, Germany and Britain, the report said. According to Iranian intelligence, they have already been arrested.

The authenticity of the confessions cannot be independently verified. The report was released shortly before the first anniversary of the death of protest icon Jina Mahsa Amini. The young woman died in police custody on September 16, 2022 after moral guardians arrested her for an alleged ill-fitting headscarf. Her death sparked the worst protests in decades. Since then, the situation has become tense and protests are now directed, among other things, against the government (see video above).

The Sakharov Prize is named after the Soviet physicist, dissident and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Andrei Sakharov (1921-1989). Since 1988, the European Parliament has awarded the award to personalities or organizations committed to defending human rights and freedom of expression. Last year it went to the Ukrainian people. The winner will be announced in October.
