New York state attorneys have filed a civil lawsuit against former US President Donald Trump for fraud. Trump’s company and his children Donald Junior, Eric and Ivanka will also be charged, Attorney General Letitia James announced in New York on Wednesday. The suspects are said to have increased or decreased their finances in order to get loans more easily or to pay less taxes.
“Donald Trump has falsely inflated his fortune by billions of dollars to unfairly enrich himself and deceive the system — and by extension all of us,” James said. Trump’s group rejects all allegations.
Prosecutor belongs to Democrats
In the United States, Attorneys General usually belong to a party and are elected by the people in many states. James is a member of the Democratic Party and serves in the New York State government. Trump, who belongs to the Republican Party, has therefore repeatedly described the trial as politically motivated, calling it a “witch hunt.”
Charges and investigations are currently underway against the 76-year-old in several cases. The FBI is said to have secured, among other things, confidential and secret documents on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. In the state of Georgia, he is alleged to have unduly pressured the election commission to give him additional votes in the 2020 election. A commission of inquiry is also investigating his role in the January 6, 2021 storming of the Capitol and may ultimately recommend prosecuting him.
