As mentioned, the shops in the Designer Outlet Parndorf are contractually obliged to keep their double doors open all year round. In the summer they cool, in the winter they heat the outside. A lot of energy is lost. Now the Greens and the SPÖ have their say.
The McArthurGlen Designer Outlet homepage states: “We are committed to listening and learning. We recognize that we need to be more vigilant about what we do and how we act.”
Nice letters, but there is no action. The center management is still pushing for the contractual agreement that the stores must keep their double doors open all year round and waste energy at their own expense. Some stores can’t even turn off their air conditioners themselves.
“There are always meetings between shopkeepers and center management, but that is a frontal presentation,” says a store manager who wants to remain anonymous because she fears the consequences. “None of us are being heard. There’s no point in talking about it.”
“It’s just irresponsible”
Michael Bacher, state manager of the Greens, says that the fact that the air outside in Parndorf has to be cooled in the summer and heated in the winter, and that the sales staff suffer as a result, is “a catastrophe”. He has the simplest of all solutions ready: “You should finally be allowed to close the doors! It’s less about inflation to 300 percent. It’s just irresponsible to waste energy like this.”
Energy Minister Astrid Eisenkopf (SPÖ) also calls on the largest private employer in Burgenland with more than 1500 employees. “Everyone has to take measures to save energy. Large shopping centers should set a good example in this regard.”
