A ship with about 400 migrants on board has been rescued by the Italian coastguard off the coast of the Calabria region. The fishing boat was escorted by three ships and arrived in the port of Reggio Calabria on Sunday morning. 200 of the migrants on board landed there, and the rest were disembarked at the port of the Sicilian city of Messina, authorities said.
Another 93 migrants arrived at the port of Roccella Ionica in Calabria on Saturday afternoon after being rescued by a Coast Guard patrol boat. The migrants, of Syrian, Afghan and Iranian descent, were on board a sailing boat that had left Turkey and was at the mercy of bad weather conditions. Among them were several women and about 30 minors.

Italy gave ships permission to land due to bad weather
Given the bad weather conditions, Italy’s right-wing government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has allowed two more rescue ships to land in southern Italy. The rescue ship “Humanity 1”, operated by the German NGO “Sea Watch 4”, was assigned to the southern Italian port of Bari on Friday evening for the landing of 261 refugees on board.
Before that, the German rescue ship “Louise Michel” landed on the Italian Mediterranean island of Lampedusa on Thursday evening with 33 migrants on board. According to the migrants, the group left for Italy from Sabratha in Libya on Tuesday. Since the beginning of 2022, 98,000 migrants have arrived in southern Italy after sea voyages.
