A strong earthquake occurred off the coast of the Philippine island of Mindanao. The US Earthquake Observatory USGS said on Saturday that the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.6. The US agency NOAA warned of a possible threat of tsunami waves in the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau and Malaysia.
The Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Philippines (Phivolcs) warned of a “destructive tsunami with life-threatening wave heights.” Wave heights of more than one meter above normal tides are possible – and possibly even higher waves in closed bays.
